Frangipanis are part of “Aussies” family history

The Exciting History of the Frangipani
There seems to be a lot of confusion and uncertainty about how the actual frangipani was named and when it was found. Believe what you will. Regardless of the historical origin, frangipanis are a flower that we “Aussies” fall in love with each summer when they are in full bloom. But for those wanting to know more about the frangipani, here’s what we know. Take it with a grain of salt. In the 1800s, a perfumery made a synthetic fragrance called the ‘Frangipanni”. And an elaborate story was formed to add hype to the composition of the fragrance, essentially created to drive sales. You can read that story here.

So, what are the facts? If you go back to our blog and the section “How was the Frangipani name created?” then you’ll find the answer. But for a more in-depth article thoroughly researched by A Wandering Botanist, click here. Even she found that her research was as confusing as it was mine.

But as for the Aussie history, that information was easier to find. In the late 1800s and early 1920s, the frangipani came to Australia from South America via the Polynesian people. These transplants then established villages in the Torres Strait and New Guinea, where the frangipani was traded between the Australian Aboriginals, all connected via a day’s paddle in a canoe from island to island. Therefore, we “Aussies” now owe the enchanting scent of the frangipani, including their luscious beauty, to those who came before us. To you, we thank you!

What’s your family history with frangipani?
Driving around your neighbourhood, the typical “Aussie” home has a frangipani tree in its front yard. They stand out either in bloom or dormant during winter. But what’s your story about frangipani and how you fell in love with them?

Most memories we come across at Fancy Frangipanis are those passed down through the generations. Nana had a tree or multiple trees in the yard, the kids climbed them, picked up the fallen flowers and placed them behind their ears. The memories of good times stayed with the kids as they grew into adults, so they too recaptured their youth and planted their very own frangipani trees; now able to pass their love onto their kids and grandchildren.

As you can see, the good ole frangipani still holds special memories between families. And now the trend has reached brides-to-be who are screaming for the flowers to be in their bridal bouquet. Or local Councils are lining their streets in the CBD area. Frangipani are also becoming popular amongst new housing estates due to their ease of care and stunning aesthetic appeal when in bloom. Whether you have a story or not, once you fall in love with the frangipani, there’s no going back.

There is a frangipani in every colour, even lilac and lavender. They also come in bicolour and tricolours with striped petals. With the addition of new flower types and colour combinations, this welcomes new fragrances. It is interesting and exciting to discern the scents of vanilla, coconut, apricot, and jasmine. The beauty of frangipanis is that they can last with you forever; obviously, we just love them. One of the all-time favourite frangipanis is in the photo below.

The Singapore Evergreen White Frangipani (Plumeria obtuse), seen above, is a prized choice in any garden. The large glossy white and lemon-yellow centred flowers set against the glossy green leaves is just sensational. Reaching five metres high, this plant is ideal for city gardens in the tropics and subtropics. The perfume carries notes of richness and romance, drawing you away to a tropical island. But, no matter your choice, you won’t be disappointed with the new addition to your garden from Fancy Frangipanis.
